After filming of the assembly process and a pair of stand-ups, we went to test a new version of SVLK-14S rifle, after some changes designed to optimize performance at ranges over 2000m.
Optimization touched barrel length, muzzle brake and case preparation process. Also the day before we test fired our new solids at 100 meters that proved to be pretty good. It was decided to not fire them at 2000m yet, not to interfere for the purity of the experiment. On them we will write separately. Shooting was conducted as before, using Jameson bullets, pretty similar to J40 Lost River. We didn’t like bullet weight difference with them (within 0.9 gr), which, of course, influenced result at distance that far. It should be noted that none of our firing bullets we selected bullets by weight, which may be one of the main reasons for the vertical, always present in our firings with this bullet.
Accuracy tests were carried out at distance of 2000 m. Total was made 20 shots.
We’ve got to note another complicating factor in the shooting. Changes made to the gun, moved the point of impact approximately 20 MOA and older 50 MOA rail didn’t give us needed adjustment on Valdada scope down to zero the rifle at 100 meters. To save time, we decided not to mill existing rail and set a standard rail — 20 MOA. Now we got 100 m zero but were out of need ajustments up, having only about 50 MOA left. Fortunately, the sight had a grid in the MOA and the vertical branch was down from the center 25 MOA. Aiming at the lower edge of the grid, I thought about the possibility of distortions, but this did not happen, as it became clear from the results of the shooting. Aberrations either did not exist or were immaterial. Also from the «cons»: to see the entire grid, I had to reduce the scope power from 40 to 24.
It was planned to conduct a parallel shooting with two cameras: one at the gun position, the other — at the target. Target crew set our standard test board dimensions 150 by 120 cm and camera 3 meters from the target.
At the beginning of the group, it was clear that it would take sighting shots, as was made several changes: in the rifle and ammunition. Therefore, we calculated the shot approximately.
Wind was coming from 3 o’clock 1.2 to 2.5 gusts rarely to 3 m / s by changing the angle of 30-40 degrees. Group was shot at 1.5-2 m / s condition.
First and subsequent two shots fell very slightly above the target at 11 o’clock. Slight change to the scope and later all the shots except 2 misses came in the target or directly in front of it. It was clear and all the hits and misses were visible through spotting scope and the sight quite clearly.
Just when four shots began to form a something reminding a group on the right (from shooter’s view) of the target, as the line of inquiry has come to the radio: «Shall we turn the camera on?». All guys at the range exhaled: «What the *^#%!!??» I had to interrupt the shooting and wait for the group approach to activate the camera.
With the resumption of the group condition in general have not changed. Forming a group on the target is clearly seen in the following video, just starting from the 5 th hit (the 8th shot). Ninth shot went low, right in front of the target, within its size. 10th shot and 6th continued getting started and the 7th hit formed a very nice group of three shots, a palm-sized, which apparently was caused by firing in right condition, and this is confirmed by the subsequent close consecutive hits. Whenever we have clearly caught on condition — this reflected on the target.
Next, the 12th shot and the 8th hit. Thirteenth shot — 9th hit, a small vertical. Fourteenth shot chipped the left edge of the target (10 th hit).
11th, 12th and 13th hit you can see on the video — they all came to the left side panel, forming as it were an independent group that was caused by firing in slightly different condition.
As can be seen from the video, as well as from the following photo, the biggest problem with the shooting was vertical, rather than wind, an encouraging, as it is subject to purely technical solutions.
First of all, I see potential improvement — in work on own ammunition. No complaints on the rifle — to K-14 have no complaints, it does the job. When shooting in the day there was feeling of confident, reliable hitting at 2km. Just the way it should be.
Well, we were especially pleased that these tests were witnessed and filmed by broadcaster Russia Today, whose videos we will publish too. They certainly are not as technical as experts would like. So, for the specialists we will do a separate film.
